This course begins with a review of the basic concepts of crustal stresses and fluid pressures leading to an understanding of rock failure and friction. These ideas are then focused for the consideration of practical problems related to how stress states may be constrained by various techniques through to how such information might be used to evaluate the stability of boreholes and pre-existing faults.
