South Bow Corporation is advancing its proposed 450,000-bbl/d Prairie Connector pipeline from the oilsands to the international border but the project won’t proceed unless the U.S. government can provide assurances it won’t cancel the presidential permit granted by Donald Trump earlier this year in the future.

Interest is increasing in Western Canada’s massive oil and gas resources but U.S. and multinational oil companies still aren’t jumping headfirst into making deals, McDaniel & Associates executive vice-president Mike Verney said at the Calgary Energy Roundtable last week. 

After a typical spring breakup, drilling activity across Western Canada rebounded sharply in May, with rig counts running well ahead of year-ago levels as higher crude prices supported producer activity.
